2006-03-22 11:25:28As one of the eight National Bases for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language, the School of Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language (STC) has its origins in the Center for Teaching Chinese as Foreign Language and the Institute of Language and Philology. The School was set up as a separate entity in 1996 to specialize in teaching and doing research in Chinese language and culture.
STC offers foreign students the following programs and courses: a B.A. program and a foundation course in Chinese, M.A. programs and Ph.D. programs in linguistics and applied linguistics, the Chinese language and philology. At present, there are 443 international and Chinese students, among whom there are 31 postgraduates and doctoral candidates, 146 undergraduates, 35 preparatory course students and 231 language students.
The School has established extensive academic links with prestigious universities and institutes overseas, such as Harvard University and Arizona University in the USA, Cambridge University and Durham University in the UK, Kobe University in Japan, the State University of Milan in Italy, Sidney University in Australia.
At STC, there are 38 faculty members, among whom 4 are professors, 10 are associate professors, and 5 are part time professors at home or abroad. Currently, more than 30 members of the STC staff have successfully taught Chinese language abroad. Many teachers of STC have been invited to give lectures, take part in joint-research projects, or attend academic symposiums in other countries and the regions of Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macao.
The STC staff has set a good record of publications and regularly participates in international conferences and workshops. In recent years, more than 150 papers as well as 40 works on teaching Chinese as a foreign language and the Chinese language have been published.
All students interested in studying and doing research in Chinese language and culture are welcome at STC.
