The first lady of Zimbabwe becomes student of Renmin
2007-11-28 04:10:19 On 20th Nov, 2007, the first lady of Zimbabwe, Mrs. Grace Mugabe gained anther special title—international student of Renmin University of China. On this day, she formally registered as an undergraduate student of School of Teaching Chinese as Foreign language, Renmin.The registration ceremony was held in the 101 Conference Room in Centennial Hall. Prof. Cheng Tianquan, Chairman of the University Council, Prof. Chen Yulu, Vice President of Renmin, Mr. Frederick M. Shava, Zimbabwean Ambassador to China, Madam Xu Lin, Director General of The Office of Chinese Language Council International (Hanban) attended the ceremony. Prof. Cheng issued the admission certificate to Mrs. Mugabe and welcomed Mrs. Mugabe to study in Renmin on behalf the university.
Under the effort of President Mugabe, Hanban and Renmin, the Confucius Institute in University of Zimbabwe was established in March, 2007, where three months later, Mrs. Mugabe began to learn Chinese from Mr. Mu Yunfeng, a Chinese language teacher sent by Renmin and apply for the undergraduate study in Renmin. The admission committee of Renmin admitted Mrs. Mugabe to the Chinese Language program.
The Chinese architecture, culture and language have been long attractive to Mrs. Mugabe. She is preparing to construct a school for orphans, which would require Chinese as the compulsory course.
Mrs. Mugabe said in her thank-you address that she would try her best to learn Chinese and she wish to learn more about China in the future.
